Throughout most of 2020 and into 2021, the Coronavirus pandemic has impacted life across America – including access to campgrounds. Initially, numerous campgrounds closed due to the virus. Most campgrounds later reopened, some completely, some partially, and some with procedures and/or facility limitations to address the concerns of COVID-19. This page has tracked public and private campgrounds, RV parks, and dispersed camping locations that are currently closed, are not accepting new reservations, or are operating with restrictions prohibiting some types of campers. If you would like to add information or a place to this list, please submit closures – or reopenings here.

Please be sure to contact a location directly before setting out – some places that reopened closed again due to local COVID-19 outbreaks, or are operating with restrictions that may cause you to reconsider your stay.

Are campgrounds open for camping during the Coronavirus?

The CDC addresses travel, stating “delay travel until you are fully vaccinated. If you are not fully vaccinated and must travel, follow CDC’s recommendations for unvaccinated people.”

This document addresses Coronavirus-related closures or limitations only. Seasonal closures or closures due to other disasters or reasons are not included in this document.

Quick Stats

• While many state park campground systems closed partially or completely during the initial months of the Novel Coronavirus pandemic, in the late summer of 2020 all state park campgrounds had reopened in some capacity. While a few areas imposed tighter restrictions or closures again in December 2020, all are currently operating on their typical seasonal schedule.
• Army Corps of Engineers (COE) campgrounds, which were uniformly closed nationwide in early Spring 2020 due to the pandemic, have largely reopened.
• Many casinos and their corresponding parking lots, which often permit overnight parking, closed during the early months of the pandemic. While many have reopened to overnight parking, we recommend you have a backup plan if intending to utilize a casino parking lot as an overnight resting location.

National Park Closures

NPS statement & response to COVID-19.

Many national parks are operating in limited capacities. Please check directly with a park’s website or ranger system before attempting to visit.

• Acadia National Park campgrounds are open on a seasonal schedule. 
• Amistad National Recreation Area has reopened all single family campgrounds.
• Arches National Park Devils Garden Campground reopened March 1st, 2021.
• Assateague Island National Seashore campgrounds reopened June 15th. Backcountry camping reopened Friday – Monday on October 9th.
• Badlands National Park – The South Unit of Badlands NP, which is located on Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, is closed to the public in order to comply with the Oglala Sioux Tribe’s Shelter in Place Ordinance. Campgrounds in the Northern part of the park are open.
• Bandelier National Park single family campgrounds are open.
• Big Bend National Park campgrounds and backcountry camping are open, but reservations are required.
• Big Cypress National Preserve campgrounds and camping are open.
• Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area campgrounds are open.
• Big South Fork National River & Recreation Area campgrounds reopened on June 3rd.
• Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park reopened all campgrounds.
• Blue Ridge Parkway campgrounds are open seasonally.
• Bryce Canyon National Park campgrounds have reopened.
• Buffalo National River Arkansas campgrounds reopened May 29th.
• Canyonlands National Park campgrounds reopened July 1st.
• Cape Hatteras National Seashore camping reopened May 22nd.
• Cape Lookout National Seashore beach overnighting and dump station have reopened.
• Capitol Reef National Park has reopened all campgrounds.
• Chaco Culture National Historical Park Gallo Campground is open.
• Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historic Park has reopened most campgrounds.
• Chickasaw National Recreation Area campgrounds have reopened.
• Chiricahua National Monument reopened their campground on October 1st, 2020.
• City of Rocks National Preserve reopened all campgrounds.
• Colorado National Monument reopened Saddlehorn Campground June 1st.
• Congaree National Park has reopened their campgrounds. Reservations are required before arrival. Backcountry camping has reopened.
• Crater Lake National Park reopened their campgrounds.
• Cumberland Gap Wilderness Road campground reopened June 11th, 2020.
• Cumberland Island National Seashore reopened all camping July 6th, 2020.
• Curecanti National Recreation Area campgrounds reopened June 1, 2020.
• Death Valley National Park has reopened Furnace Creek Campground, Texas Springs Campground, Sunset Campground. The primitive campsites at Eureka Dunes, Homestake Dry Camp, and Saline Valley Warm Springs are open. Stovepipe Wells, Mesquite Spring, Emigrant, and Wildrose Campgrounds reopened on Friday, February 5, 2021.
• Denali National Park reopened all campgrounds.
• Devils Tower National Monument campground opened May 15, 2021.
• Dinosaur National Monument campgrounds reopened June 7th. Backcountry camping has resumed.
• Dry Tortugas National Park campground has reopened.
• Everglades Nationals Park has reopened front country and backcountry camping.
• Glacier National Park has reopened campgrounds.
• Glen Canyon National Recreation Area campgrounds and dispersed camping have reopened.
• Grand Canyon National Park campgrounds have reopened.
• Grand Teton National Park has reopened campgrounds.
• Great Basin National Park reopened most campgrounds.
• Great Smoky Mountains National Park reopened single-site campgrounds on June 8th. Group campgrounds are open.
• Great Sand Dunes National Park campgrounds reopened in June. 
• Guadalupe Mountains National Park has reopened campgrounds and backcountry camping.
• Gulf Island National Seashore campgrounds have reopened.
• Haleakalā National Park wilderness campsites and Hosmer Grove Campground are open. Kīpahulu campground is closed.
• Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park campgrounds are open.
• Hot Springs National Park reopened the Gulpha Gorge campground on May 29th.
• Hovenweep National Monument reopened its campground on September 8th.
• Isle Royale National Park campgrounds have reopened.
• Indiana Dunes National Park reopened Dunewood Campground. 
• Joshua Tree National Park reopened all campgrounds. Individual campsites are limited to members of one household per site. Group sites are limited to 25 people maximum and up to three households per site.
• Lake Mead National Recreation Area reopened campgrounds and RV parks as well as backcountry camping.
• Lake Meredith National Recreation Area has reopened camping.
• Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area will reopen all campgrounds to reservations only by Memorial Day.
• Lassen Volcanic National Park reopened campgrounds on June 1st, and began following typical seasonal campground opening timelines after that date.
• Mammoth Cave National Park campgrounds have reopened.
• Mesa Verde National Park Morefield Campground has reopened.
• Mojave National Preserve has reopened both campgrounds. Primitive dispersed vehicle camping is permitted.
• Mount Rainier National Park campgrounds are open.
• Natchez Trace Parkway Meriwether Lewis Campground is open.
• Navajo Nation Tribal Parks are closed.
• New River Gorge National River campgrounds are open.
• North Cascades National Park single-family campgrounds reopened June 12th, 2020.
• Obed Wild & Scenic River Tennessee has reopened Rock Creek Campground.
• Olympic National Park has reopened all campgrounds.
• Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument Alamo and Twin Peaks campgrounds are now open and backcountry permits are available.
• Ozark National Scenic Waterways campgrounds reopened May 22, 2021.
• Padre Island National Seashore has reopened all camping.
• Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore has reopened most campgrounds.
• Pinnacles National Park campground is open to essential travelers only.
• Redwood National & State Parks campgrounds are open. 
• Rocky Mountain National Park campgrounds are open on a seasonal schedule for reservations only.
• Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Park campgrounds have reopened by advanced reservation only. 
• Shenandoah National Park reopened all campgrounds and backcountry camping June 11th, 2020.
• Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore has reopened all campgrounds.
• Theodore Roosevelt National Park campgrounds have reopened.
• White Sands National Monument is closed to backcountry camping.
• Wind Cave National Park reopened Elk Mountain Campground.
• Yellowstone National Park reopened Madison Campground, Bridge Bay, Grant Village, and Canyon Campground. Fishing Bridge is closed for the 2021 season.
• Yosemite National Park has reopened all campgrounds to those with reservations only. First-come, first-served camping will not be available in 2021. Reservations are required to drive into Yosemite through September 30, 2021
• Zion National Park campgrounds are open for those with reservations.

Army Corps of Engineers (COE) Response

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (COE) was the first overseeing body to mass close their campgrounds due to the Coronavirus pandemic. COE managed campgrounds in every Division and District in the nation began an orderly shutdown beginning on March 20th. Beginning May 15th, Army Corps Divisions, and the districts within them were permitted to reopen campgrounds and campsites based on local mandates.
