RV Camping in and Around Lassen Volcanic National Park

By Nathan Paul Swartz

With a towering volcano covered in snow, tall conifers and relatively little traffic, it’s no wonder Lassen Volcanic National Park made our best national parks for camping.

Lassen and surrounding area features every type of camping. Get your spot directly in the park at heaven slices like Manzanita Lake Campground, only steps from hiking trails in the neighboring mountains and forest.

Score free camping in Lassen National Forest, which completely surrounds the national park, via the area’s most beloved campground at Mud Lake Trailhead. Dozens of private RV parks offer up every experience from swimming pools and cable TV to just a simple place to plug in and relax.

The beauty of Lassen Volcanic National Park lies in its simple diversity. You can go all the way, break in your boots and climb through the snow on an overnight backpacking trip, or kick back and wait for the fish to bite along the shores of many a lake in the park. Violent features like boiling hot mud rivers are the ever-present reminder that your playground is an active volcano, while the stars woo you to sleep and chirping birds are the only alarm clock you’ll ever need.
