The Best (And Worst) Galveston RV Parks

By Campendium

Galveston sits on Galveston Island off the southeast coast of Texas. It is a popular resort city hosting tourists from its home state as well as from around the United States and Canada.

RVers who enjoy traveling during the winter months typically stay at one of Galveston’s RV parks. These “Winter Texans” are lured by the city’s historic downtown, the many restaurants, shops, and art galleries as well as 32 miles of beaches.

Beaches, Museums, and More!

If you enjoy the beach, then you’ll love visiting Galveston. East Beach is the largest beach in Texas and you’ll frequently see volleyball games, people riding horses, and families gathered to sunbathe, build sandcastles and play in the water.

The beaches closer to town are along Seawall Boulevard. Stewart Beach is along this 10 mile stretch by the seawall and offers concessions and umbrella rentals. Lifeguards are on duty and restrooms and showers are available, making it a popular beach for families.

Explore The Local Food Scene

Considering the huge variety of restaurants in Galveston, you may have a hard time choosing. Regardless, you need to sample some seafood at least once while you’re visiting.

Shop at one of the seafood markets for freshly caught seafood. Katie’s Seafood Market and the Galveston Shrimp Company are two of the most popular. There’s nothing quite like eating fresh fish you’ve prepared on the grill to enhance your camping experience.

Museums and Galleries

Need a break from the beach? Me either, but you can’t miss out on these museums. Tour Galveston’s 1892 Bishop’s Palace and 1895 Moody Mansion with their wonderfully preserved Victorian architecture and period furnishings. Surround yourself with more Victorian architecture in The Strand District where historical markers enhance your self-guided tour.

Enjoy exhibits at the Bryan Museum, home to one of the largest collections in the United States of Texas and American West artifacts and art. The Galveston Railroad Museum, Galveston Naval Museum, and tours of the Tall Ship ELISSA at the Texas Seaport Museum attract a wide variety of visitors.

Along Postoffice Street you can browse in a nice selection of art galleries and boutiques. End your day of perusing with a performance at The Grand 1894 Opera House. You won’t be disappointed.

Fishing

Do you enjoy fishing? Then head to Galveston’s 61st Street Fishing Pier. Here you can fish straight from the pier all day and into the night and if you need bait, they’ve got it. They’ll gladly rent fishing gear, too.

For other fishing adventures, schedule a charter to try your luck at catching flounder, red snapper, sailfish, mahi-mahi, and other saltwater fish from the Gulf of Mexico.

Traveling With Kids?

If your kids need more variety than daily visits to the beach, here are some extra kid-friendly locations in Galveston.

Learn about local pirate lore at Pirates! Legends of the Gulf Coast. Or, send the kiddos off to their exclusive Pirate Camp.

Other kid-friendly activities include:

  • Moody Gardens
  • Schlitterbahn Water Park
  • Historic Pleasure Pier
  • Dolphin Watching Tours

On a budget? You can get a discount for some of the attractions listed throughout the article when you purchase a Galveston Island Pass. It’s a great way to see a lot for less.

Now let’s get to those Galveston RV parks so you know where to stay during your next trip.

Recent Review: “Very nice park with all the amenities. Concrete pad, two pools, hot tub, private bath and shower rooms. There’s also an on-site pizza maker and a nice laundry room in which you need to use a debit or credit card with each machine. There is beach access right across the street. They have a store with a two flavored daiquiri machines. We stayed 3 nights and loved it. You cannot go wrong staying at this park.” – romstead

Jamaica Beach RV Resort

Recent Review: “This park is 10 min from Galveston, which we considered a positive to be just outside of the hustle and bustle. We had a great pull through site (because every site is a pull through site). In addition to the standard amenities, JBRV had a mini-golf course in the RV park that we played and thoroughly enjoyed. There was an indoor infinity hot tub the size of a small pool, which I enjoyed on several occasions. We did not use the pools or lazy river as it was too cool to pool during our visit, but the place was loaded with fun spots for all ages. Additionally, the beach was just a walk across the street.” – Mema&Cema

Stella Mare RV Resort

Recent Review: “Nice location on Galveston Island. Out of town, so very quiet. Galveston Island State Park is a few miles away and offers beachcombing, kayaking, and bird watching. Take the short, free ferry to Port Boliver and keep an eye out for dolphins. Go over to Pelican Island to see the submarine and the sunken ship. Houston and Space Center Houston are just an hour or so away.” – The Globe Trekker Family

Sandpiper RV Resort

Recent Review: “Very convenient location. Only a short walk to the beach and to the seawall. We stayed the last week of March, so not a lot of tourist or noise from the road. Everything is well maintained and clean. Because the resort wasn’t full of campers, we could see the ocean from our campsite.” – On the Road Again
